Ferry Departure at Bellingham

Here are a few pictures of our ferry voyage to Juneau. Ok, really they're mostly pictures of the ferry leaving the dock at Bellingham. We traveled up here last August. Look forward to even more pictures of this journey in future posts! Enjoy!

P.S. The people in these pictures aren't people I know. If it looks like the picture is supposed to be of them - they turned as I was trying to take the picture.
P.P.S. The small blue tent that is featured is our tent! ;)

When you take the Alaska Marine Highway there are three different sleeping options if you are going to be on the ferry overnight. You can pay extra and stay in a cabin, that has bunk-beds and usually it's own private bathroom; sleep in the lounge chair areas around the boat; or pitch a tent and camp out for a few nights. W and I decided that we wanted to try the tent method for traveling up here. There are portions of the deck devoted to these camp areas, they paint the deck green wherever they allow tents, and you are allowed to camp there. When you pitch a tent on a ship it's a good thing to bring a lot of duck tape. It's not something that the Alaska Marine Highway website mentions but it is something I saw in a youtube video I watched about traveling on the Alaska ferry before we went. Several people who brought tents didn't know to bring duck tape as well so once we finished taping down our tent to the deck we went around helping other people tape theirs down and pretty much gave away all our duck tape that was left. It was a fun experience to camp on the ferry, but when you're traveling with your most important possessions, it would be a lot easier to just get a cabin. We're getting a cabin on our return trip. Should be take the ferry again, traveling just for fun, I think it would be fun to camp on the deck again, it create a much more social experience for us. Another note about camping on the ferry is make sure to bring padding to sleep on, preferably something very thick, W and I only had a sleeping bag to sleep on top of and it was hard and very cold!
